Color Guard & Winter Guard

The Guard is an auditioned extension of the band program at Onalaska High School. Students can participate in fall and winter guard at OHS.  Students in the guard learn critical skills in the visual arts including dance, equipment, and teamwork! The winter portion of the season involves traveling to regional competitions of the North Star Circuit in the late winter to early spring. The guard typically practices Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the Fall and Winter. Students who participate in Guard are also members of the band program on wind or percussive instruments.

Fall Guard Instructor: Stephanie Campbell

In 2014 the program welcomed Stephanie Campbell on the marching band staff as the color guard instructor. At the time, she was a 5th-grade teacher at Eagle Bluff.  Currently, Mrs. Campbell is a full-time mom and works with the OHS Guard throughout the year providing a great experience for our guard members. Her experience includes Graduating from Rosemount High School where she participated in both Guard and band(clarinet) activities. She has also had experience through the Blue Stars from La Crosse Wisconsin. Recently she has worked with the La Crosse Stars and supports other guard programs around the area. She has also mentored several former Onalaska students who are now leading their own guard programs.

Winter Guard Instructor/Fall Assistant Instructor: Emma Trettin

Emma Trettin joined color guard after graduating from high school in Hutchinson, Minnesota, spinning with the Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corp in their 2019 season. Later on, Emma joined the Screaming Eagles Marching Band and became a section leader for her final year. Through SEMB Emma learned rifle, gained dance and choreography experience, and became a part of the Onalaska Guard community. This year she is directing the Winter Guard program and is excited to see where it takes her.

Winter Guard Choreographer and Designer: Kay Dale

Kay Dale first joined the program in 2015  as a freshman at Onalaska High School. She was taught by Mrs. Campbell for four years and was a section leader for her last two. She is now the coach of the UWL Screaming Eagles Marching Band Color Guard and has worked as the assistant coach for the OHS Color Guard for two years. Her other experience includes working with several other guard ensembles on campus as well as OMS students. Starting this year, she will be leading the winter guard program and is beyond excited to spend more time with the students and help them grow in their abilities.
